Core Tip |
The mechanisms that can lead to damage and subsequently to degenerative diseases like age related macular degeneration (AMD) remain unclear, especially whether light induced radical stress or damage is a direct interaction of light with photoreceptors or a secondary mechanism. Recently it was shown that after blue light not only the mitochondria in the retinal cells can produce massive amounts of of reactive oxygen species (ROS) but also the outer segments of photoreceptors. Furthermore, there are indications that the outer segments harbour ectopic enzymes of the respiratory chain being an additional source of ROS production. In the light of these novel aspects we have compiled a review revisting the data of oxidative stress in the retina - possibly one cause for development of AMD. |
