Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology holds a great potential for medical research. Patient-specific iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes offer an unique framework for various applications such as cardiotoxicity screening, drug discovery, disease modeling, and cell therapy. In the particular case of inherited cardiomyopathies and channelopathies, iPSC-based models prompted the study of disease mechanisms in an individual-/allele-specific manner, as well as the customization of therapeutic regimen. Herein, we will present and critically discuss the current knowledge and key experimental approaches, which qualifies patient-specific iPSCs as robust “disease-in-a-dish” models for genetic cardiomyopathies and channelopathies after 15 years of research. |
